As part of the 2024 Sussex County Lifesaving Association national championship team, the Rehoboth Beach Patrol proudly hosts two lifeguard competitions each summer. Both of these events showcase the skills and knowledge needed to be effective lifeguards and help build camaraderie among lifeguards serving on various regional patrols.
Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship
The United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships is hosted in Rehoboth Beach each July. Some 300 lifeguard-athletes from patrols in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, DC, and West Virginia participate in action-packed events, including:
- a 2-kilometer beach run
- beach relay
- surf race
- rescue race
- landline rescue race
- board rescue race
- run-swim-run
- beach flags
Those lifeguards finishing at the top in each event category go on to compete in the USLA Championships, held at a different location each year in August.
Rehoboth Beach Patrol Lifeguard Olympics
Also in July, lifeguards from around the regional coastal area compete in a fierce and friendly competition for bragging rights during the Rehoboth Beach Patrol Lifeguard Olympics.
