Garbage collectors empty bins into a white truck on a suburban street, with trees and a house in the background.

The City of Rehoboth Beach collects residential waste twice a week mid-April through October and once a week November through mid-April. A special citywide pickup takes place the Friday after Thanksgiving.

  • Residential trash pickup is on the south side of Rehoboth Beach Mondays and Thursdays mid-April through October and on Mondays November through mid-April.
  • Pickup on the northside, including the Schoolvue area, is Tuesday and Friday mid-April through October and on Tuesdays November through mid-April.

City commercial businesses contract directly with private providers for service

Three wheeled trash bins: a blue bin, a gray bin, and a black bin, each with a hinged lid and a handle for transportation.

City waste collection is for typical household trash and garbage only. The city does not collect the following items as part of its weekly waste collection service:

  • construction materials, such as wood and debris
  • tires
  • concrete
  • electronics
  • items that may contain refrigerant (e.g., refrigerators, air conditioners)
  • hazardous waste, such as paints and batteries.

For information about recycling household batteries and disposal of construction debris or hazardous materials, visit the Delaware Solid Waste Authority website or call 800-404-7080.

Recycling

Through its contract with Blue Hen Disposal, the City of Rehoboth Beach provides weekly curbside, single-stream recycling pickup every Friday from May through September. Recycling pickup is every other Friday from October through April.

  • The city provides one free recycling container per residence.
  • Recycling containers must be set out before 7 am the day of collection. Containers must be removed by 9 pm the day of collection.
Delaware recycling guidelines poster showing acceptable items (paper, plastic containers, cans) and not acceptable items (food waste, electronics, plastic bags). Contact info provided.

Items that may go in your single-stream recycling container include:

  • newspapers and magazines
  • narrow-neck plastic bottles
  • aluminum and steel cans
  • corrugated cardboard and boxboard
  • junk mail and other paper products
  • glass

In addition, recyclables and yard waste may be dropped off at 37540 Oyster House Road from 9 am-1 pm Monday, Friday, or Saturday. This service is available only to City of Rehoboth Beach residents and businesses. The Recycling and Yard Waste Center is monitored 24/7.

  • Residents must provide proof of a local City of Rehoboth Beach address and driver’s license.
  • Businesses must provide a copy of a current City of Rehoboth Beach business license showing a physical location within the city limits.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control offers a handy tool to find out if an item can be recycled at home, needs to be dropped off, or if it is trash.

Yard Waste

Yard waste is collected citywide every other Wednesday throughout the year. All yard waste must be:

  • in a city-supplied yard-waste container
  • in paper bags; yard waste in plastic bags will not be picked up
  • bundled and tied with non-plastic rope or twine

Fall leaf collection

The city collects leaves piled at the curb from the first week in October through the second Friday in May. Clean, loose leaves and pine needles are picked up weekly on the southside of town on Thursdays and on the northside, including the Schoolvue area, on Fridays. Tree limbs and brush must be tied with rope or twine in arm-length bundles for ease of pickup.

  • Leaves and pine needles may be piled at the curb or on the shoulder, not in travel lanes.
  • Leaves to be picked up should be out early on collection morning; if they’re not out when the vacuum comes through, they’ll be picked up the following week.
  • Don’t block fire hydrants.
  • Do not place any foreign materials, such as lumber, stones, bricks, branches, or any type of garden or flower stalks with the leaves. Such materials can cause personal injuries and damage the leaf vacuum.

Christmas trees

Seasonally, formerly live Christmas trees may be left loose at the curb for pickup. Remove tinsel, decorations, and the stand.
