Seasonal Officers

Rehoboth Beach Police Department seasonal police officers go places! Former RBPD seasonal officers now work at law enforcement agencies across the country, including with the FBI, DEA, Border Patrol, Secret Service, and Delaware State Police.

We hire only top-notch candidates to help us ensure that the Nation’s Summer Capital remains a safe, pleasant, and friendly destination. We’re looking for candidates who possess good judgment, maturity, integrity, and credibility. If that’s you, come work at the beach this summer!

Applications for the 2025 summer season are due in April.  Three to four paid weekend training sessions are required of all candidates who are conditionally hired.

Training for the 2025 season begins April 25 and includes the following weekends:

  • April 25-27
  • May 2-4
  • May 9-11
  • May 16-18 for bicycle officer training

Compensation & Benefits

In addition to having the beach as your workplace, seasonal officers receive:

  • a rate of at least $21.50/hour for first-year officers
  • a $500 sign-on bonus
  • $500 longevity bonus for working half of weekends in September and October
  • $250 recruitment bonus
  • internship credits
  • payment for mandatory training session attendance
  • all uniforms and equipment
  • medical care, hospitalization, and follow-up care should you be injured in the line of duty.

Hiring Process

The process for hiring seasonal police officers, includes:

  • submission of an application
  • sign-off on a background check
  • written examination
  • physical fitness test (for bike patrol unit applicants only)
  • interview
  • modified background investigation
  • psychological exam
  • drug screening
  • physical exam (responsibility of applicant to schedule with their primary care physician).

The City of Rehoboth Beach does not provide benefits or leave for seasonal employees. Any personal leave must be taken without pay.

Housing is not provided by the city. Seasonal police officer candidates are encouraged to contact area realtors as soon as possible to secure summer season accommodations. The police department will make every effort to connect candidates with others looking for seasonal housing.

Qualifications & Requirements

Age, Citizenship & Other General Requirements

To be eligible to be hired as a seasonal officer with the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, candidates must:

  • be at least 19 by June 1 of the year hired
  • be a United States citizen
  • be a high school graduate
  • possess a valid driver’s license
  • have no felony or domestic violence convictions
  • submit a completed application
  • authorize a background check
  • pass a written examination and modified background investigation
  • have been honorably discharged and/or have a record of positive conduct with any prior military service.

Health and Wellness

Applicants must have:

  • no impediment of the senses
  • acuity of vision of not more than 20/200 corrected to 20/20 in each eye
  • the ability to distinguish between red, green, and amber
  • no pathology of the eyes
  • acceptable depth perception
  • normal hearing in both ears, per current standards
  • no physical deformities that would be detrimental to proper performance of police duties
  • a weight proportionate to height and build or body fat percentage.

Physical Fitness Test

The Bike Patrol Unit physical fitness test is competitive; applicants will be ranked based on their performance. Applicants must be able to achieve minimum standards during fitness testing as outlined in the table below.

  • The minimum number of sit-ups and push-ups must be completed within one minute.
  • Sit-ups must be completed with hands interlaced behind the neck, knees bent, and a spotter holding the applicant’s feet.
  • Male applicants must complete push-ups on their toes. Female candidates may perform push-ups with their knees on the ground.
  • Resting for push-ups is permitted only in the up position.

Criminal History

The following conditions will likely result in disqualification:

  • felony or domestic violence conviction
  • any criminal activity considered a felony under federal law in the state in which the activity occurred
  • an arrest or conviction that indicates a pattern of disregard for the law
  • frequent behavior of an undesirable nature
  • commitments for a mental disorder to any hospital, mental institution, or sanitarium that would prevent the applicant from possessing a firearm as provided in Section 1448, Title 11 of the Delaware criminal code.

Drug Usage

Applicants must pass a drug-screen test. All drug use, including illegal use of prescribed drugs, is subject to review at the time of application.

Candidates who have a drug-related history described below will be automatically disqualified:

  • use of mind-altering hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD, PCP, heroin or any of its derivatives
  • use of any illegal drug within one year of application
  • the sale or delivery after attaining the age of 21 of any non-narcotic or narcotic-controlled substance, as defined in Title 16 of the Delaware criminal code.

Candidates with the following drug-related history may be disqualified:

  • excessive experimental use of marijuana and/or more than two uses of cocaine and its derivatives
  • use of a controlled substance after having submitted an application for employment as a seasonal police officer

Driving History

Any alcohol-related driving arrests and overall driving history will be subject to review upon application.

Candidates will be automatically disqualified for:

  • a DUI conviction within the previous five years
  • any motor vehicle conviction for failing to stop at the command of a police officer, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, criminal negligence resulting in death, homicide, or assault
  • license suspension or revocation withing three years of application

Candidates may be disqualified if their driving history/record indicates:

  • poor, dangerous, or otherwise undesirable driving habits
  • operation of an automobile in a manner that may endanger public safety
  • use of narcotics or other drugs or alcoholic beverages that impairs the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Written Examination

The written exam will test job-related knowledge that includes but is not limited to:

  • observation and memory
  • ability to learn police material
  • situational judgement and problem-solving
  • verbal and reading comprehension.

Interview

Interviews are one-on-one in a question-and-answer format. Applicants should present themselves in a professional manner while responding to various job-related questions.

Applicants will be scored based on criteria such as:

  • appearance
  • communication skills
  • employment experience
  • bearing
  • motivation
  • responsibility and level of maturity
  • sincerity of purpose
  • suitability for the position.

Modified Background Investigation

When candidates successfully complete the steps above, a modified background investigation will be undertaken.

Hiring Process

To ensure that the Rehoboth Beach Police Department is getting the best of the best candidates, the department’s hiring process is rigorous. Upon submission of an RBPD application packet, candidates should expect the following:

Qualifications

You must meet the minimum eligibility standards outlined below to be considered for a police officer position in Rehoboth Beach.

  • A college degree is not required, but college-level coursework in law enforcement-related fields (e.g., criminal justice, psychology, sociology, business administration, political science, counseling) is preferred.

Written Examination

Oral Board Interview

Three or more certified officers comprise the oral interview panel.

The panel will judge each applicant based on:

  • appearance
  • communication skills
  • employment experience
  • bearing

  • responsibility and level of maturity
  • sincerity of purpose
  • suitability for the position.

Background Investigation

When candidates successfully complete the steps above, a background investigator is assigned. The investigator will contact the applicant’s family, neighbors, references, past employers, and current and previous dating partners.

Covered areas include the applicant’s:

  • education
  • residential history
  • dating partners
  • employment history
  • driving record
  • credit standing
  • criminal history
  • drug usage
  • participation in illegal activity
  • encounters, if any, with the police.

The background investigation also includes a computer voice stress analyzer interview that helps verify the truthfulness of information provided by applicants throughout the process.

Chief’s Interview

The police chief will meet and ask questions of each qualified applicant prior to hiring selections.

Communications Specialists (Dispatch)

City of Rehoboth Beach communications specialists take emergency and nonemergency calls from the public and share critical information with police officers as well as dispatch fire and ambulance calls.

Communications specialists must be able to:

  • remain calm in stressful situations
  • collect, process, synthesize, and relay critical information
  • provide additional communication support services to emergency responders.

Communications specialists must work rotating 12-hour shifts that include weekends, nights, and holidays.

  • starting salary for this position is $51,500 annually ($24.75/hour)

Qualifications and Requirements

To be eligible to be hired as a communications specialist with the Rehoboth Beach 911 Center, candidates must:

  • be at least 18
  • be a United States citizen
  • be a high school graduate
  • possess a valid driver’s license
  • demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills and excellent command of English
  • be a self-starter with a positive attitude and ability to work tactfully with the public
  • have the ability to learn and interpret maps, multitask, and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • demonstrate proficiency in keyboarding skills
  • have the ability to operate the computer-aided dispatch/telecommunications system
  • learn and use codes, abbreviations, and terminology utilized in emergency communications.

Hiring Process

The hiring process for communications specialists includes a computer-generated exam that assesses skills related to:

  • multitasking
  • typing efficiency
  • map reading
  • decision making
  • memory recall
  • listening skills.

The process also includes:

  • a panel interview
  • comprehensive background investigation that includes a voice-stress analysis exam
  • interview with the police chief.

Upon an offer of employment, the applicant must pass both a physical and psychological exam as well as a drug test.
