Two temporary pedestrian-safety projects installed
at King Charles Avenue intersections

The City of Rehoboth Beach has installed two temporary traffic-calming and pedestrian-safety measures on King Charles Avenue for the 2024 summer season. These pilot projects were among immediate recommendations from the Rossi Group's parking and traffic study, presented in December. A draft of the study's final report and recommendations was presented to commissioners April 8.

To enhance pedestrian safety along King Charles Avenue, new crosswalks and a pedestrian relief island have been installed at Stockley Street. Additional crosswalks and bump outs are being utilized at New Castle Street. A survey to measure users' perceptions of the projects' effectiveness and the level of safety provided is available via a QR code on posts at the intersections and via Reach Out Rehoboth.

These pilot projects will help city officials determine if these or other traffic-calming measures should be constructed in these locations and/or elsewhere within the city permanently.

City offices to close at 12:30 pm May 8

In celebration of Public Service Recognition Week, designated during the first week of May to honor the people who serve as federal, state, county, local, and tribal government employees, City of Rehoboth Beach offices will close at 12:30 pm Wednesday, May 8, so that city employees and their families can enjoy a spring picnic.

Acting City Manager Evan Miller says that the picnic event is "our way of expressing gratitude for employees' hard work and dedication to the city throughout the year. This is a chance to acknowledge their commitment and selflessness in improving the lives of our residents."

The event also will serve as a kick off to the upcoming busy summer season.

FOR LOCAL SHOPS AND BUSINESSES

Protect your trees from crape myrtle bark scale

A nasty little sap-sucking insect is making a home for itself on some Rehoboth Beach crape myrtles. The insect called crape myrtle bark scale feeds on the trees' sap and can eventually cause a sooty mold to accumulate, making crape myrtles appear charred as if they had caught fire.

With the assistance of a professional arborist, the Trees & Green Infrastructure Committee has put together information about crape myrtle bark scale and how to protect your landscape.
