Rehoboth Avenue repaving now set to begin around Oct. 1

The contractor who will be repaving Rehoboth Avenue this fall is completing another job on Shuttle Road. As a result, the start of work on Rehoboth Avenue has been pushed to around October 1. The first few weeks of work will focus on crosswalks and curbing; then milling and repaving will begin.

Reminders about this work:

  • Working hours will be 6 pm-6 am daily from Sunday evening through Friday morning.
  • Repaving will begin at the drawbridge and head east, loop around the front of the bandstand restrooms, and then work west to the traffic circle.
  • The hope is that the contractor can complete the work before overnight winter temperatures get too cold for paving. If not, the contractor will have to complete the project in the spring before the summer season starts.
  • Lane closures and parking restrictions will be necessary in work zones. Flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control.

Updated information about this DelDOT-managed project will be posted to the Additional Projects page at Reach Out Rehoboth.

County, Lewes proposing wastewater partnership with Rehoboth

Sussex County and the Lewes Board of Public Works (BPW) have proposed a partnership with the City of Rehoboth Beach to utilize additional capacity available via the city's ocean outfall for the discharge of up to 5 million gallons per day of effluent treated at a new county facility to be built at Wolfe Neck. The county and BPW have proposed a one-time payment of $20 million to the city for this access.

This is the second time in recent years that the county has made a similar proposal to the City of Rehoboth Beach. This latest proposal was initiated as the county and Lewes see it as the most viable option to address the need to remove the Lewes treatment plant from its current location in a flood zone and in light of the county's existing wastewater agreement with the City of Rehoboth Beach.

The new proposal was brought to the Board of Commissioners initially at the July 8 workshop meeting. The topic was discussed again at the September 9 workshop meeting. As the county and Lewes BPW have requested an indication from the city one way or the other by the end of the year, the topic is expected to be discussed further at upcoming meetings this fall.

The current proposal would:

  • create a tie-in point near the State Road pump station
  • eliminate effluent disposal into the Lewes-Rehoboth canal
  • require the county to design its new treatment facility to meet or exceed standards followed by the city's plant
  • have the county assume 100% of maintenance cost for the area seaward of the Deauville Beach vault, which includes bi-annual dive inspections and all diffuser maintenance and cleaning.
The City of Rehoboth Beach has hired Hazen & Sawyer to conduct a risk study of the current proposal.

King Charles pilot program survey results are in

Over the summer, the City of Rehoboth Beach implemented two different and temporary traffic-calming and pedestrian-safety measures on King Charles Avenue. To help assess their effectiveness, a survey was made available. Throughout the summer, 106 responses were received - 39 responses were received in person in the field by representatives from Rossi Group, the city's traffic study consultant, while the others were submitted online.

Of all 106 responses, 73.6% came from residents/property owners; 21% from visitors, and 4.7% from individuals who identified themselves as "other." Additional survey results are available at Reach Out Rehoboth.

The Board of Commissioners is scheduled to receive a presentation on survey results at its October 7 meeting.

Rotary Club has a heart for Rehoboth Beach

The Rehoboth Sunrise Rotary Club recently led efforts that resulted in the donation of five AEDs (automated external defibrillators) to the city. Four of the AEDs have been installed along or near the boardwalk at Maryland, Rehoboth, and Delaware avenues as well as Laurel Street. The fifth AED will be installed at the new Rehoboth Beach Patrol facility when it is completed.

The Rehoboth Beach Rotary Club worked with the Southern Sussex and Long Neck clubs as well as Bayhealth and Heart-to-Beat on obtaining and installing the AEDs. Funding for this effort came through a Rotary District 7630 grant. Thank you, Rotary!

a campaign to recognize open-water lifeguards
as first responders. You can help support the effort
